San Francisco Airport and Airlines

San Francisco International Airport is an international airport in unincorporated San Mateo County, 13 miles south of Downtown San Francisco, California and covers over five square miles.

By passenger traffic, SFO is the 10th busiest airport in the United States and the 25th busiest airport in the world, handling over half a million passengers each week.  The Airport averages over 1,000 flight operations per day.

Within its boundaries are three domestic terminals, an International Terminal Building, a United Airlines Maintenance Operation Center, six parking garages, several cargo buildings, one BART Station, over six miles of AirTrain track, nine AirTrain Stations, and a United States Postal Service facility.  The International Terminal is the largest international terminal in North America.

San Francisco International Airport (IATA Code: SFO; ICAO Code: KSFO; FAA Code: SFO) is the Bay Area’s largest airport serving non-stop flights that cover more than 50 cities all around the world on more than 45 international airline carriers. The airport is a major transportation hub within the United States as well as it serves 12 domestic airlines that offer flights between 86 cities in the country. It has flights to points throughout North America and is a major gateway to Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australasia.

While your there, visit the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and the Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum. It opened upon the activation of the International Terminal on December 10, 2000, in a new 11,000-square foot interior space as an architectural adaptation of the Airport’s own 1937 passenger lobby.

Originating more than four decades ago as a pioneering exhibitions program adapting available spaces for the public presentation of museum exhibitions, SFO Museum now reaches millions of Airport visitors annually with a broad range of innovative programming in twenty-five galleries located throughout the terminals of San Francisco International Airport.

With plans to expand upon a world-class aviation collection and research facility; ambitious initiatives to broaden its digital outreach and provide deeper connections for online visitors; and the promise of far-reaching exhibitions in several new galleries currently under development, SFO Museum is well positioned to continue its role as a guide and partner to those visitors curious about their world and the breadth of creativity it has inspired.
